General Background

Amid the storms that swept the Atlantic in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Marquis de Lafayette became a bridge between two continents and two revolutions, earning him the title "Hero of Two Worlds." His life struck like lightning across the ocean — carrying the dawn of French liberty into the fight for American independence.

Born into a noble family in Auvergne, France, Lafayette embraced the ideals of the Enlightenment from a young age. When the American Revolution broke out, he spent his own fortune, defied the king's orders, and sailed west to join the cause. He endured hardship alongside the Continental Army at Valley Forge and, at Yorktown, fought beside Washington and Rochambeau, helping secure the decisive victory that gave birth to the United States.

When revolution later swept through France, Lafayette was named Commander-in-Chief of the National Guard. He helped draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, wove together the red and blue of Paris with the white of the monarchy to create the Tricolor, and ordered the dismantling of the Bastille — tearing open a path toward a new age of liberty.

But the tide of revolution soon turned against moderation. Lafayette was stripped of power and imprisoned for years, yet he never abandoned his ideals. During the July Revolution of 1830, he took command of the National Guard one final time. When he died in Paris, the United States mourned him as a nation, and he was laid to rest with American soil placed in his grave. To this day, his name lives on in streets, squares, and the pages of history — as a friend of America, a friend of Washington, and a friend of liberty.
